Go to Hermann's, immediately. I haven't tried a single thing that wasn't amazing. My favorite are the chocolate dunkers. They also make amazing Kopenhagen bars, they are unique and delicious, raspberry, chocolate and a few other delicious ingredients. Every other Wednesday they make spaghetti bread, it is phenomenal. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It is cash only, so make sure you have some (there is an ATM about a block up the street).

Walked in after parking in front of the store.... actually, we were heading over to Astoria, but decided to stop here... I saw the chocolate covered bacon and decided to try them... got all 4 of them and this thing called buttery dough.... as the name states, it was buttery and doughy.... As the lady brought the stuff, unthinkable happened! She dropped the bacons on the floor... what gives!!! I was so hurt! walked about disappointed because I couldn't try my chocolate covered bacon and since I'm not in Royal Oak often, it was shame..... As for the buttery dough... yup, doughy and buttery... DAM good! Ate 1/2 of it after lunch and finished the rest after dinner... I knew it wouldn't last more then 8 hours in the house!!

After many years, and on a whim, I walked into this place (first visit since they moved from the old location). Bought a couple of pastries, but something caught my eye. I asked about it, and was told it is a special coffee cake the baker only makes once in a great while. I bought it and took it over to my mother's that same morning, to have with her morning coffee. She thought it was delicious. Some months later, as I was visiting her again, I stopped in to see if they had that coffee cake; they did not. I asked it I could order it, and they said I could. I ordered it for a few days later, when my uncle would be coming to her place for coffee, and this might be a nice cake to have. Knowing that mom was fading fast and this might be one of the last meaningful times they could spend together--and knowing how much she liked that cake--I looked forward to arriving at her door with the cake. On the appointed morning, I arrived to pick up the cake. After some time in the back, the sullen counter person came out to tell me that the baker said it wasn't ready; 'How much longer will it be? I am supposed to bring it to coffee at my mother's." She disappeared in the back for a while. "He said come back in the afternoon." "Is there any way he could make it sooner? I ordered it three days ago for my mom. She's having company for coffee this morning." She disappeared again. "He says no." "Wow. That's hugely disappointing." I started to leave. "Do you still want us to make it?" That last question stuck with me. Yes, I wanted them to make it. I wanted the baker to come out, express his sorrow, and offer to have it ready in a half hour. I wanted him to say, "Here's a cup of coffee, on the house. Take a stroll around downtown and I'll have it ready when you come back." But none of that happened. "Oh, yes, by all means I still want you to make it." She disappeared again. "He says you'll have to pay now." After a long moment, during which I tried to process what I was hearing, I turned and walked out. Well, a couple months later, Mom was gone. She never again got to taste that coffee cake. It's not like Herman's Bakery killed her. But they didn't help make a little old lady comfortable in her final days. They don't need my business. More importantly, they don't WANT my business. Patronize them if you feel you must. I won't be back.

THIS IS WHAT A BAKERY SHOULD BE! This is not a pretentious cupcake place. No fancy upscale decor just simple and delicious. Your not going to have to pay $5.00 for a cupcake here. Everything in the place is made fresh by actual bakers who have been doing so for many, many years. My favorite are the lunch sticks! They now offer chocolate covered bacon!

Don't waste your money or time. We bought a lemon bar that had no lemon flavor and a cheese cake bar that had a crust that fell apart. The staff also wasn't helpful or welcoming. Head to Papa Joes or Holiday Market, it might cost a little more but at least your baked goods will have flavor!

Love Herman's Bakery! I remember my Daddy coming home from work on Wednesdays and brining the best bread sticks for dinner. Well these have not been made since the 1990's and today I got a call from the bakery that he baked them today. I bought 3 pounds of them - Just as good as I remember them. Can't wait until he bakes them again. Please, please bring them back as a regular. Also, does anyone remember how many WW points these were or how they worked into dieting from years gone by?

this place was sure a let-down. being in royal oak, after reading their website, i was expecting a classy bakery. NO. its dingy and leaning toward divey. what first attracted my attention on the website was the knishes. what they are passing off as knishes are a square of puff pastry baked with a lump of loaded mashed potatoes. didn't taste bad, just not a knish. onion rolls were so white "wonder bread"; no chew/bite to them. could have bought any off the shelf at the grocery store and got better. jelly donuts had a cheap filling, pretty bad. apple fritters nothing special. never did see any of those soups and specialty items listed on the website. i can say their prices are cheap, but it just goes to show, you get what you pay for. what a disappointment. will not return.

This Bakery is the best in Royal Oak. they have all kinds of bread, fresh donuts, meat pies, soups, cakes and the cupcakes are pretty good and only$ 1.00 each. I now go to Hermans every other day. they are close on sundays and mondays :-(
